ILS – Israeli Shekel

The Israeli pound (לירה ישראלית, “lira yisraelit”) was the currency of the State of Israel from June 1952 until it was replaced with the shekel on 24 February 1980. The sheqel has been a freely convertible currency since January 1, 2003. The currency is not produced in Israel, as the country has no mint. Instead banknotes are imported by air and coins by sea. From its inception, the old shekel was a weak currency as a result of the country’s failing state-based economy of the period. A full-blown financial crisis in the 1980s led to massive inflation.

The current series was originally planned to include images of the deceased Israeli leaders Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Rabin. A number of these coins, in their first minting, had the images of the individuals on the notes engraved on them.
